Action research in behaviour guidance: The Phoenix Cups® approach

As part of our ongoing commitment to delivering high quality, contemporary professional development resources for members, we're excited to announce a new module, Action research in behaviour guidance: The Phoenix Cups® approach is now available in the FDCA Learning Hub. The module is a two-part series and is designed for all levels of early childhood education, coordinators, educational leaders, service staff, managers and approved providers.

Part 1 will explore and reflect on current approaches to understanding behaviour with a research-informed practical framework (the Phoenix Cups) that can be applied to your educational practice.

Part 2 will develop your understanding of action research and how this practice, together with your knowledge of the Phoenix Cups framework, can be used to implement practice change in your service.

In this series, you will:

  • discuss current approaches to guiding and supporting children’s behaviour

Additional Child Care Subsidy - Eligibility and Categories

The Additional Child Care Subsidy (ACCS) provides extra help with the cost of early childhood education and care to families facing difficult or challenging circumstances. In most cases, ACCS covers the full cost of a child’s early childhood education and care fees.

ACCS is paid directly to child care providers, who pass it on to families as a fee reduction. The amount of ACCS a family can receive depends on the category they are eligible for.

Eligibility for ACCS

To be eligible for ACCS a family must:

  • be eligible for Child Care Subsidy (CCS)
  • meet other criteria depending on the ACCS category they are applying for

ACCS Categories

There are four ACCS categories:

  • Child wellbeing - for families who need practical help to support their child’s safety and wellbeing.
  • Grandparent - for grandparents receiving income support who are the primary carers of their grandchildren.
  • Temporary financial hardship - for families experiencing temporary, significant financial stress.
  • Transition to work - for parents or carers transitioning to work from income support.  From 5 January 2026, recipients will be entitled to a minimum of 72 hours per fortnight of subsidised care.

How to Apply for ACCS

  • Child wellbeing - Child care services apply for this category, on behalf of the family
  • Grandparent, Temporary Financial Hardship and Transition to Work – For these categories, families apply through the Services Australia website or via their myGov account.

Child Care Subsidy periods of emergency

The Australian Government Department of Education (the Department) has recently declared a Child Care Subsidy (CCS) period of emergency in several local government areas (LGAs) in Queensland due to the impact of flooding. The CCS period of emergency applies from 24 March 2025 to 7 April 2025.

If services, families or educators are affected by Tropical Cyclone Alfred or another natural disaster, please visit the Department of Education website to view the most up to date list of declared LGAs and timeframes.

Providers, services, and families in affected areas can access emergency support for the specified dates. The Department will continue to monitor emergency situations and update the list as needed.

Nature Play Week

Nature Play Week runs from Wednesday 2 April - Sunday 13 April and was developed collaboratively by individuals and organisations involved in the Kids in Nature Network.

Nature play is a term used to describe the creation of simple play opportunities in the natural environment. Nature play encourages kids and parents to see the natural environment as a place to enjoy, play, imagine, relax and explore.

Getting your kids involved in Nature Play doesn’t have to be expensive or time-consuming, it can be as simple as a visit to the local park where the kids can roam free. Nature Play Week is a great place to get started.

A growing body of evidence suggests that, from backyards to streets, parks and gardens, from the beach to the bush, kids do better outside!

To get involved in Nature Play Week visit the website to see events in your area and to register your own event.
