FDCA Online Engagement Series: Episode 12 - Critical Reflection for Family Day Care

The next installment of the FDCA Online Engagement Series will take place on Thursday 17 October 2024 with a focus on Critical Reflection for Family Day Care.

With Critical Reflection being an area that family day care performs less well in, this is a must watch episode for all family day care educators and service staff looking for ways to gain insights and knowledge in this area.

Our special guest panel will focus on the following topics:

  • Understanding Critical Reflection
  • Tools and Strategies for Critical Reflection
  • Applying and Demonstrating Critical Reflection

In exploring these topics, the panel will address the differences between reflection and critical reflection and also examine why critical reflection is particularly important in the context of family day care. The panel will also unpack ways that educators can critically reflect on their practice whilst embedding it into their daily routines and how services can create a supportive environment that encourages a culture of critical reflection that is sustained over time.

This episode will see FDCA co-hosts, Advocacy and Engagement Manager Michael Farrell and Sector Liaison Coordinator Lyndall Cotterill joined by:

  • Rhonda Livingstone - National Education Leader and General Manager Leadership, Quality and Regulatory Support Group, ACECQA
  • Kerry Smith - Approved Provider, We Belong Family Day Care

New Report - The Future of the Early Childhood Education Profession

Commissioned by the Australian Government, Jobs and Skills Australia (JSA), in partnership with HumanAbility, yesterday released its report into the Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC) workforce: ‘The Future of the Early Childhood Education Profession’.

The report focuses on ECEC workforce and skills issues, with particular attention on training, attraction and retention, to complement the broader scope of the other inquiries being undertaken in this space. Not surprisingly a key finding of the report shows current workforce levels across the whole ECEC sector are not sustainable to meet existing or future levels of demand, particularly within regional and remote areas. Pleasingly, the report notes a number of issues raised by Family Day Care Australia (FDCA) in our submission earlier this year.

The report outlines 28 key findings and presents 41 recommendations aimed at addressing both the immediate and long-term challenges facing ECEC, including:

  • a proposed review of the content of the Certificate III in ECEC in collaboration with states and territories to identify opportunities to reduce complexity of the learning outcomes without detracting from quality (Recommendation 2) , and
  • Consideration of specialisation pathways within the Certificate III in ECEC and Diploma course to serve different service types : In Home care, Family Day Care and Out of School Hours Care. (Recommendation 31).

A summary report and the extended report can both be found at: www.jobsandskills.gov.au/studies/early-childhood-education-and-care-study.

You can find FDCA’s submission into the JSA Capacity Study on our submissions page here.

New FDCA Learning Hub Program - Governance and Risk Management

FDCA is pleased to advise members that a new program “Governance and Risk Management” has been added to the FDCA Learning Hub courtesy of ECA. This new program is available to all members at no additional cost.

ECA, in partnership with the NSW Department of Education, has developed a free Governance and Risk Management Program designed to support approved providers, service leaders, managers, nominated supervisors and persons with management or control (PMCs) to develop an increased understanding of risk management and its place in governance and leadership.

The courses in the program cover key topics to support an increased understanding of risk management and its place in governance and leadership, unpacking and exploring the differing roles that service leaders play, or should play, in risk identification and risk minimisation to ensure compliance and quality. The program includes practical scenarios and strategies relating to risk assessment and management, with a focus on:

  • active supervision
  • safe sleep and rest
  • safe transportation
  • child protection/child safe environments.

This program will be suited to services, however it will also be available to educators.

To access this new program, simply enter your FDCA Member Zone and click on the Learning Hub tab.

The Parenthood releases IMPACTFUL report

Earlier this week, The Parenthood released IMPACTFUL, a report that delves into the urgent need for accessible and affordable early childhood education and care in regional, rural and remote Australia.

A key recommendation to help achieve this is to improve family day care and in-home care provision, as both care types play a key role in ECEC accessibility in the regions where there are no other available services. This applies in particular to smaller rural and remote areas.

As an Access for Every Child coalition partner, FDCA believes that every child, no matter where they live, deserves access to quality early childhood education and care.

R U OK?Day - Thursday 12 September 2024

R U OK?Day will take place tomorrow (Thursday 12 September) and is a reminder to all that you don’t need to be an expert to ask a friend, colleague or family member if they are OK.

By having regular, meaningful conversations, you build trust and normalise talking about what’s really going on, so when the people in your world find themselves struggling, they know you’re someone they can talk to.

So whilst R U OK?Day on Thursday September 12 is a National Day of Action, everyone is encouraged to Ask R U OK? Any Day of the year because a conversation could change a life.
