Federal Government Announces New National Commissioner for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children and Young People

Prime Minister Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced yesterday that a new position of National Commissioner for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and young people will be created later this year.

The Prime Minister stated that the Commissioner will address the unacceptable rates of out-of-home care, assist in strengthening families and keeping children safe.

"The National Commissioner will be dedicated to protecting and promoting the rights, interests and wellbeing of First Nations children and young people, as well as calling on their strengths, sense of hope, and ideas for change," said Prime Minister Albanese.

The Government also announced yesterday a commitment to supporting First Nations children, families and communities with a further investment to support culturally responsive toy libraries.

Minister for Social Services, Amanda Rishworth highlighted the importance of culturally appropriate and integrated learning through playgroups and toy libraries.

“Toy libraries and playgroups both play such a vital role in support for families and I’m so pleased the playgroup pilot will now also include a specific focus for toy libraries,” Minister Rishworth said.
